My favorite flower, the lotus. Highly prized flower in Buddhism, it symbolizes purity, simplicity and so forth. Living in a murky and foul environment, yet they strive to grow without the "dirty" influence. The mild fragrant of lotus overcomes muddy aroma, leaving mild scent of uniqueness. Mother nature's creation of lotus petals are sensational, such pleasure looking of large, pointed tip of pink, white and lilac colors. The uses of the plant have been discovered from ancient times such as leaves, seeds and roots in delicious recipes, as herbal treatments, as decorations & offerings at temples... I remember a poem about autumn raindrops falling on withered lotus leaves, whilts the white cranes walked in gray mud ... such reminescent lines can make a person blue. Lotus flowers were an inspiration to many poets, and they will continue to do so.
Mình rất thích hoa sen nên năm ngoái mình lấy hạt sen trong gương sen khô để trồng thử (loại được bán ở các tiệm làm Craft, dùng để cắm hoa). Ban đầu lấy dũa móng tay (electric file mà mấy người làm nail) khía 1 lớp vỏ cứng bên ngoài để cho hạt hút nước. Nếu không thì ngâm cả chục năm cũng không mọc mầm. Kế đến lấy hạt bỏ vào ngâm nước âm ấm (hoặc lạnh cũng được). Sau vài ngày thì sẽ thấy mầm con đâm ra (có khi cả tuần). Trong thời gian chờ cho hạt nảy mầm, lấy chậu hoặc sô (loại mà cao cao chút xíu, không nên lấy cái nông quá) bỏ đất vào. Mình trộn đất vườn + potting soil (đất công nghiệp) khoảng 1/3 đến 1/2 chậu, rồi bỏ nước vào. Khi mầm dài khoảng 1 ngón tay giữa thì ghim vào chậu đã chuẩn bị sẵn. Một tháng sau bắt đầu bón phân (loại cho kiểng nước: water plant or lily plant). Mùa thu lá tàn thì đem vào nhà giữ khoảng 65F, nhớ đừng cắt lá, cứ để tự nhiên cho nó rụng xuống. Khi xuân ấm 70-80F thì đem ra ngoài. Nghe người ta nói là 2 năm mới có bông.
